How to Fix iPhone Unavailable Lock Screen on 15.2 or Later

Are you having problems with your iPhone appearing as unavailable? You’re not alone. Hundreds of users have been reporting this issue recently but it’s not a new problem.

The iPhone unavailable screen can be caused by a lot of different things including too many incorrect passcode attempts.

Don’t get too worried though because we’re about to show you what can be done to fix it.

Note: The solutions mentioned here can also work for “iPad Unavailable” lock screen.

Part 1 – What Does “iPhone Unavailable” Mean?

The overwhelming majority of the time, “iPhone Unavailable” lock screen is a result of people trying to unlock their iPhone (running on iOS 15.2 or later) and getting the passcode wrong too many times.

For iOS 15.1 and below, it will say “iPhone is Disabled” if too many incorrect passcodes are entered.

Nobody purposely makes their phone unavailable. With modern iPhone models, we have become so used to Touch ID and Face ID that we forget what we assigned as our passcode. This becomes a problem when you update your iPhone or it restarts as you’ll be requested to enter the passcode.

Those users who don’t update the iOS frequently will eventually be forced to update and when that happens, since you’ve waited so long to update, there’s a good chance you’ll have forgotten the passcode.

After 3 failed attempts a short lockout period will begin where you can’t attempt another passcode. Once the time is up, you’ll have another attempt before you get locked out again. The time will increase each time after this and eventually you’ll be completely locked out of the iPhone.

This is most likely why you’re experiencing the iPhone Unavailable/Security Lockout screen and there are ways to resolve this.

Part 2 – How to Fix iPhone Unavailable Screen

Now let’s get into the important details – how you can fix the unavailable iPhone so that you can start reusing the device without this issue bothering you anymore.

#1. Use the “Erase iPhone” Option (iOS 15.2 or Later)

For iPhone users running iOS 15.2 or later, there is a built-in “Erase iPhone” feature that will allow you to wipe the device without using a computer.

If you’ve reached 7 failed passcode attempts you’ll see this button on your screen and here’s what you have to do to use it.

Step 1 – Press the Side/Lock button on your device to show your display.

Step 2 – At the bottom-right tap on Erase iPhone.

Step 3 – This will prompt you with the Erase All Content & Settings briefing. Read the text and tap Erase iPhone.

Step 4 – Next, type the password of the iCloud account/Apple ID that is linked to this iPhone.

Step 5 – Tap Erase iPhone one last time and the device will now perform a factory reset.

A common problem that users have with this method is that they don’t see the “Erase iPhone” option on the lock screen. This is usually because they don’t have an “iPhone Unavailable” lock screen but instead have the “iPhone is Disabled” screen.

Different solutions apply to that problem so if that’s what you see then we suggest looking for solutions specific to that issue.

#2. With iTunes

Another way to solve the iPhone unavailable problem is to use iTunes. Admittedly this is one of those solutions which is a hit or a miss – there’s a chance it’ll work for you, or it might not. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth trying!

Step 1 – Disconnect your iPhone if it is charging via the lightning cable, then turn it off using the Side/Lock button.

Step 2 – Put your iPhone into Recovery Mode. You can do this by first holding down the relevant button depending on the iPhone model you own:

  • iPhone 8 and later: Side button
  • iPhone 7/7 Plus: Volume Down button
  • iPhone SE (1st gen) and earlier: Home button

Step 3 – While holding down this button, use a lightning cable and connect your iPhone to your PC. Release the button when you see the Recovery Mode display appear.

Step 4 – Next, click on Restore and wait while iTunes handles the remainder of the process.

Step 6 – After iTunes is done, you can disconnect your iPhone and restart it to begin setting it up again.

The big downside of using this method to fix the iPhone unavailable screen is that you’re going to lose your data. Photos, videos, texts, app data, and everything else stored on your iPhone will be wiped during this process.

However, if you don’t care about that, this is the perfect method.

#3. With iCloud

In a similar way, you can fix this problem by using iCloud. Even though this feature is designed for users to wipe their devices in the event of them being stolen or lost, it can also be used if you want to bypass the iPhone unavailable lock screen.

Step 1 – Go to and sign in with the Apple ID that you have connected to your iPhone.

Step 2 – Once you are inside of the dashboard, click on Find iPhone.

Step 3 – At the top of your screen click on Devices and select the correct iPhone.

Step 5 – Your iPhone will now begin remotely erasing all the data and reinstall iOS. After a few minutes, you will be able to set it up without the unavailable screen.

Again, this is going to wipe your iPhone and thus any personal data will be lost. But it is an incredibly convenient and simple way to remove the lock screen and regain full control of any iOS device attached to your iCloud account.

You don’t need to be familiar with this type of software to get the job done and the unavailable screen won’t bother you anymore.

Part 3 – What to do After Erasing

So, you’ve used one of these methods to fix your iPhone and get rid of the iPhone unavailable screen, what do you do next?

Here’s a checklist that will help you to get everything set back up.

Restore a Backup

If you used a method that resulted in data loss then you’ll want to restore a backup so that your photos and app data aren’t gone forever. You can do this through iCloud or iTunes.

Set up the iPhone as New

Perhaps you want to use a fresh iOS install to keep your iPhone as clean as possible. In that case, no backup restore is needed. You can just set up your iPhone as a new device and do as you please.

Download All Your Apps

Depending on how you set up your iPhone, you’ll probably have to redownload some apps.

Fortunately, many apps store data in your iCloud account so reinstalling them will also restore the associated data you had with those apps.

Set Up the Lock Screen

The last thing you’ll want to do is set a new lock screen. This can be a simple passcode or something more impressive like Touch ID or Face ID.

Just make sure that you remember the passcode so you don’t have to go through this process again!

Removing the iPhone unavailable screen is a bit of a hassle and can take some time if you haven’t done it before. After you find a method that works for you though, the next time it’ll be quick and easy.

Tenorshare 4uKey is the ideal solution since it has the highest success rate, but the other solutions are viable options. Hopefully this helped to swiftly resolve your issue!
