We got this email from one of our readers who are locked out of his iPhone. In fact, this is a common problem for those who get a second-hand device.
As we cannot find out if it is a screen lock or iCloud lock from the email, so we decide to offer guides for both situations here.
Before talking about how to get into a locked iPhone or iPad, you need to learn why this happens.
Part 1. Why Are Your Locked of Your iPhone/iPad?
As discussed above, you may be locked by Screen Lock (passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID) or iCloud Activation Lock.

Part 2. How to Get into a Locked iPhone/iPad without Password?
Let’s separate the solutions into 2 parts: getting into a disabled iPhone & getting into an iCloud locked iPhone.
Note: the following solutions can also work for iPad.
2.1 How to Get into a Disabled iPhone/iPad without Password?
When you’re locked out of an iPhone, the most common way to solve this is to make a factory reset by iTunes. Before doing this, please update iTunes to the latest version.
2.1.1 Steps to Reset iPhone with iTunes

Step 2. Put it into Recovery mode, here is how:
- For iPhone 8 and later models: connect your device to computer via a USB cable while holding the side button. Keep holding until you see the “Connect to iTunes” (Recovery mode) screen.
- For iPad with Face ID: connect your iPad to computer while holding the top button. Keep holding until you see the “Connect to iTunes” screen.
- For iPhone 7/7Plus, iPod touch (7th generation): connect your device to computer while holding the Volume Down button until you see the “Connect to iTunes” screen.
- Other devices: connect your device to computer while holding the Home button until you see the “Connect to iTunes” screen.
Step 3. Then you’ll see a message on iTunes saying that: There is a problem with the iPhone…
Step 4. Click on Restore to download the firmware package. After restoration, set up your device.
