Please help! My Samsung Galaxy S8 is connected to my WiFi network but it still can’t access to Internet. It says “Internet may not be available, connect to another network”.

Everyone with a Android phone has had moments where they’re presented with “Internet may not be available” when connecting to a WiFi network, and it’s possibly the most frustrating error to handle.
For one, it’s incredibly limiting – the majority of your smartphone features won’t work without internet access (e.g. messaging apps or general browsing). On top of that, if you have a data plan and your phone won’t connect to WiFi network, anything you do will use your data instead.
So, what can we do to fix this issue?
Part 1. Why Does My Phone Say “Internet may not be available”?
Based on the examples we’ve seen, and the users who have reported this error to us, we’ve found these to be the top reasons for internet may not be available.
#1. Outdated Firmware
Keeping your smartphone’s iOS/Android firmware up to date is incredibly important.
If you’re running out-of-date firmware then some aspects of your device, such as network connectivity, may malfunction or be unresponsive.
#2. Conflicting Apps/Services
Some apps and services have a lot of control over your device’s functionality.
This isn’t usually a problem, but if multiple apps/services are trying to modify your network connections at the same time, this creates a conflict and will cause problems.
#3. Network Misconfiguration
There are lots of considerations when it comes to network configuration.
When you connect to a website, DNS servers must respond to your device’s requests – if there is a wrong configuration on your end or the server end, a successful connection can’t be made.
Your reason might not be included on this list (for example, your device could have faulty hardware), but that doesn’t matter too much. The solutions you’re about to read are suitable regardless of why the error occurs.
Part 2. How to Fix “Internet May Not Be Available” on Android Phone
Now that we’ve got the technical talk out of the way, we can now go ahead and look at how you can approach fixing “Internet may not be available”.
1. Restart Phone
The absolute first thing you must try is restarting your phone. Sometimes all you need to do is restart which prompts your smartphone to reload the firmware. If any errors were preventing the firmware from establishing a network connection, this will quickly fix the problem.
We can’t give specifics about restarting your phone since all smartphones have different manufacturers. Usually, keep on press the power button, there will be as Restart option.
2. Change DHCP Mode
We won’t get too complicated when discussing this, but the DHCP mode is critical when your device is connecting to a network. By manually adjusting your device’s DHCP mode, we can ensure that the right settings are in place.
Step 1 – Open the Settings app and go to the Wi-Fi section.

Another way you can fix the “Internet may not be available” issue is by resetting the network settings. This is basically just a way to factory reset the network settings (so that they’re the default values) without factory resetting absolutely everything.
Step 1 – Launch the Settings app and select General Management (or System).
Step 2 – Go to Reset and in this menu, tap on Reset network settings.
Step 3 – Confirm this action and your smartphone will then reset, and you must connect to your networks again.
4. Check for Updates
As we mentioned at the beginning of this article, outdated firmware can be responsible for a lot of smartphone problems. That’s why we’d recommend checking if a new version of the Android system is available to you and if there is, install it.
Step 1 – Open the Settings app and go to System > About Phone.
Step 2 – Tap on Software Update (on some phones you may have to go to Advanced to find this setting).
Step 3 – If an update is found, follow the instructions to download and install it.
5. Forget Wi-Fi Network
Although your Wi-Fi network might not be the subject of this issue, disconnecting your phone from the network completely then reconnecting it has proven to help with internet connection may not be available. Here’s how to forget a Wi-Fi network.
Step 1 – Open Settings and go to Wi-Fi or on some devices Connections.
Step 2 – Under the Wi-Fi section, tap on your home’s Wi-Fi network.
Step 3 – Tap the menu icon at the top of the screen and tap Forget network.
Step 4 – Wait a few minutes then connect your device to the Wi-Fi again.
6. Wipe Cache Partition
This method is a bit more technical than the others. Your smartphone stores some data in the device’s cache and it’s possible that this data is the problem that is preventing you from connecting to the internet.
Wiping the cache partition is what you can do in this case. And this won’t erase your data.
Step 1 – Start by turning off your smartphone.
Step 2 – To turn it back on, hold the Power button and Volume Down.
Step 3 – Once the Android system recovery menu appears, use the volume keys to select Wipe cache partition then press the Power button to activate this option.
Step 4 – After the wipe is complete, select the Reboot setting and your smartphone will restart.
7. Switch Between Wi-Fi and Mobile Data
Another way of finding out where the problem lies, whether it’s your smartphone or the network itself, is to switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
To do this, just disable Wi-Fi on your device (this can be done through the Settings app or the notifications menu), then make sure your mobile data is turned on.
If you are then able to access the internet without any issues, the problem is your Wi-Fi network. If you still aren’t able to access the internet, your device has a problem.
8. Restart Your Wireless Router
Assuming that “internet may not be available” error is happening because of your Wi-Fi network having problems, restart your router.
Ideally, you should restart your router once a week – this can help prevent the hardware from overheating and also clears the router’s cache.
Step 1 – Turn off your router or unplug the power adapter.
Step 2 – Wait for between 1-2 minutes.
Step 3 – Turn the router back on and wait until it has established a connection to your provider.
Step 4 – After all the router’s lights have turned on again, check if your phone can use the internet.
9. Check in Safe Mode
Safe Mode is also worth checking. By putting your device into Safe Mode, all the unnecessary background services/applications that usually run will be disabled.
If you use Safe Mode and can gain access to the internet this way, either a service or application is causing the error and you’ll need to remove the culprit.
Step 1 – Hold the Power button on the side of your device.
Step 2 – Tap and hold Power Off on the menu that appears.
Step 3 – Tap Safe Mode to select this option and your device will restart in Safe Mode.
Step 4 – After checking if the internet works, you can turn off Safe Mode by restarting your device normally.
This is one of the most effective way to fix “Internet may not be available” on Samsung Galaxy phones.
10. Disable “Smart Network Switch”
One of the ways that the Android system enhances the device’s performance is with a feature called “Smart Network Switching”. What this feature does is connect to the most stable network available to it.
For example, if you have a weak Wi-Fi connection but your device can connect to a stronger mobile data connection, it’ll switch to the mobile data. This could obviously be a problem and you might have trouble connecting to the internet, so here’s how to turn it off.
Step 1 – Launching the Settings app and go to Connections > Wi-Fi and tap Advanced.
Step 2 – Find the setting Smart Network Switch and swipe the slider so that it is off.
Step 3 – Go back and connect to your Wi-Fi again, and check if the issue is fixed.
11. Reset All Settings
Lastly, if none of these other methods fixed the internet issue, you can use the “Reset All Settings” feature. Don’t worry – this won’t delete your personal data (photos, videos, etc.). Rather, it is as close to a factory reset as can be without your data being impacted.
Step 1 – Go to the Settings app and enter the General Management menu.
Step 2 – Swipe down and tap Reset followed by Reset Settings.
Step 3 – Type your device’s passcode to confirm the reset and tap Reset Settings again.
Step 4 – The settings reset process will take a few minutes and your device will restart afterwards.
Finally, check if the “Internet may not be available” error has been fixed.
Bonus: Signs of a Bad Connection on Android Phones
Of course, if you just have a bad internet connection, there’s not a lot you can do other than upgrade your broadband or get help from your internet service provider.
Some signs that you’re on a bad connection are:
- When downloading apps or media, the download stalls at 0% and doesn’t move
- When you open the Google Play Store, the page freezes with a “Loading…” message
- When you are accessing the internet through a browser app, no pages load
- You experience the signs above on multiple devices, not just a single device
If any of these signs appear, the chances are that the problem is with your internet connection.
